If you have children, you probably understand that there are different kinds of toothpastes available for them? You may also understand that most adult toothpastes have fluoride in them, but had you heard that training toothpastes don’t have fluoride in them? Toothpaste with fluoride should not be ingested, so you shouldn’t give your kids toothpaste with fluoride in it until they’re can spit it out on their own. You should also be careful with how much fluoride you give your child because overexposure to fluoride can cause dental fluorosis.
Fluorosis is usually caused by a deficit of minerals in the outer layer, or enamel, of your kid’s teeth. This usually happens if your little one consumes a large amount of fluoride. This is one reason you shouldn’t let your kid swallow toothpaste with fluoride in it. Fluoride is generally added to water to prevent cavities and tooth decay. You should also know that fluorosis only occurs while teeth are developing.
If your child has dental fluorosis, you may start to notice white lines or white spots appear on their pearly whites. Fluorosis may also lead to dark spots on your children’s teeth. While these problems may be pretty embarrassing, fluorosis won’t actually hurt your children and can be treated. You can also help your child avoid fluorosis by making sure they spit their toothpaste out.
