The new year is right around the corner, and for many of us, this means New Year’s Resolutions! This year, resolve to touch up your oral hygiene habits to make sure you have a mouth-healthy 2018.

Brush: Make sure you brush your teeth for a full 2 minutes, twice daily. This removes plaque (a sticky film made up of bacteria) and food particles from your teeth. Use short, tooth-wide strokes. Brush the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Floss: Flossing is just as important as brushing. Floss every day for 2-3 minutes. When purchasing floss, look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to ensure you are getting a quality product. Use a new section of floss for each tooth to prevent cross-contamination within the mouth. Don’t forget to floss behind the back molars! That area is a good environment for bacterial growth.

Chew Gum: Chewing gum can be very beneficial to your mouth health. Chewing sugarless gum stimulates saliva flow, which delivers beneficial substances to your mouth while simultaneously cleaning sugars and plaque away from your teeth. Be sure to choose sugarless gum which has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
